Provinces

Madagascar is divided into six autonomous provinces (faritany mizakatena), which in turn are divided into 22 regions:

1. Antananarivo Province
   • Analamanga
   • Bongolava
   • Itasy
   • Vakinankaratra
2. Antsiranana Province
   • Diana
   • Sava
3. Fianarantsoa Province
   • Amoron'i Mania
   • Atsimo Atsinanana
   • Haute-Matsiatra
   • Ihorombe
   • Vatovavy-Fitovinany
4. Mahajanga Province
   • Betsiboka
   • Boeny
   • Melaky
   • Sofia
5. Toamasina Province
   • Alaotra Mangoro
   • Analanjirofo
   • Atsinanana
6. Toliara Province
   • Androy
   • Anosy
   • Atsimo Andrefana
   • Menabe

These regions are further subdivided into departments (or districts) and communes.

However, the intention is to replace these provinces with the regions as the highest level of subdivision, subject to a constitutional referendum in 2007.
