Population and Demographics

Mauritian society is highly multi-ethnic. Island residents are the descendants of people from amongst others, the Indian subcontinent, continental Africa, Madagascar, France, England and China.

The ethic groups within Mauritius are divided into the following:

  • Indo-Mauritian 68%
  • Creole 27%
  • Sino-Mauritian 3%
  • Franco-Mauritian 2%

The relative economic stability of the island has also attracted foreign workers, including Indian workers in the construction industry, Chinese workers in the textile industry and Taiwanese in harbour-related activities.

Of all religiously affiliated Mauritians, Hindus constitute 48%, Catholic Christians 23.6%, Muslims 16.6%, and other Christians 8.6%.
