Local Media

Although there are no newspapers in English, there are a number of Portuguese-language papers, including the following:

  • Diario de Mocambique (daily)
  • Noticias (main daily, part government-owned)
  • Demos (weekly)
  • Domingo (weekly)
  • Fim de Semana (weekly)
  • Savana (weekly)
  • Zambeze (weekly)

Due to the high levels of illiteracy (more than 50%), television and radio are the key sources of news and information for many Mozambicans. Televisao de Mozambique (TVM) is the state-run, national TV network, with other broadcasters including the popular Soico TV (STV), Brazilian-owned TV Miramar and the Portuguese state-run RTP Africa.

Radio services are provided by the state-run Radio Mozambique, which broadcasts nationally as Antena Nacional, in addition to provincial and local channels in Portuguese, English and indigenous languages. BBC World Service broadcasts on FM in Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Xai Xai and Quelimane, and there are a number of private FM stations, such as Radio Miramar, Radio-Televisao Klint (RTK) and Nove FM.
