Provinces

Rwanda is divided into five provinces (intara) and subdivided into thirty districts (akarere). The provinces and their districts are as follows:

1. North Province
• Burera
• Byumba
• Gakenke
• Ruhengeri
• Rulindo
2. East Province
• Bugesera
• Gatsibo
• Kayonza
• Kibungo
• Kirehe
• Nyagatare
• Rwamagana
3. South Province
• Butare
• Gatagara
• Gikongoro
• Gisagara
• Gitarama
• Kamonyi
• Nyanza
• Nyaruguru
4. West Province
• Cyangugu
• Gasiza
• Gisenyi
• Kibuye
• Nogororero
• Nyamasheke
• Rutsiro
5. Kigali Province
• Butamwa
• Kicukiro
• Kigali

Prior to 1 January 2006, Rwanda was composed of twelve provinces, but these were abolished in full and redrawn as part of a program of decentralisation and reorganisation.
