Internal Transport
There are some domestic flights available in Uganda, mainly linking Entebbe to other major towns. Charter flights are also available.
There is a local boat service that links Entebbe to the Ssese Island, and efficient (although not always safe) ferries run on the Great Lakes.
There is a comprehensive road network, extending over 28,332 km (17,605 miles) and radiating from Kampala. However, these roads can be of variable quality and tend to be fairly sparse in the north. The speed limit is 50 mph (80 kph) or 62 mph (100 kmh) on highways. There are still some army and police check points on roads and travellers should always keep their door locked whilst driving.
Bus services run between most parts of Uganda but are often very crowded and unreliable. There is also a network of Matatus (minibuses), which run to most parts of the country. Although they are often overcrowded, they are also very quick and convenient. However, visitors should be aware that there is a law against overloading, and if this happens, the driver and passengers are liable to pay a fine.
Note: There have been a number of serious accidents and highway robberies involving long-distance buses in Uganda. Visitors are advised not to travel on overnight buses.
