Brunei is a Muslim country and you should respect local customs and sensitivities at all times, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas. Dress modestly, especially in or near places of worship; women should ensure that their head, knees and arms are covered. Shoes should be removed when entering Muslim homes and institutions and visitors should not pass in front of a person at prayer or touch the Koran, the Muslim holy book.

Any public criticism of His Majesty The Sultan or other members of the Bruneian Royal Family is strongly discouraged. There are severe penalties for all drug offences in Brunei including, in some cases, the death penalty.

If food is served without cutlery, eat using the right hand only. It is also considered impolite to beckon someone with your fingers. Instead, the whole hand should be waved, with the palm facing downwards.

There are many honorific titles in Brunei. Awang, for example, is equivalent to Ms or Mrs.
