Internal Transport
There are daily domestic flights from Ratmalana Airport at Colombo to smaller airports such as Batticaloa, Gal Oya, Palali and Trincomalee. Trains also connect Colombo with all tourist towns, with an intercity express service to Kandy. Other routes tend to be more leisurely. Visitors should note that rail services to Jaffna have ceased owing to the violent political disruptions in the northern area.
Most roads are tarred, with a 75 kph (45 mph) speed limit outside towns and 56 kph (35 mph) in built-up areas. Drivers should avoid travelling at night and remote areas; flashing lights mean that the other driver is asserting their right of way. Cars may be hired from a number of international agencies; chauffeur-driven cars are relatively inexpensive and are to be recommended.
There is an extensive network of public and private bus services; however, private bus drivers can often drive rather dangerously. Buses are also available for travel within Colombo although services do tend to be somewhat crowded. Taxis in Colombo have yellow tops and red and white plates. Although they are metered, it is advisable to agree a rate before setting off. Drivers expect a 10% tip.
