Internal Transport

Helicopter transfers operate between George F L Charles (SLU) and Hewanorra (UVF) airports, and boat charters are available at Castries, Marigot Bay and Rodney Bay.

All major centres on the island are served by a reasonable road network; however, roads are narrow and mountainous roads are steep, often with unmarked hairpin bends. The main cross-island route runs from Castries in the north of the island to Vieux Fort in the south. Cars may be hired in Castries, Soufrière and Vieux Fort, or through hotels.

Minibus services connect rural areas with the capital, and buses leave Castries every 30 minutes to Gros Islet in the north of the island. Taxis are also available, with fixed rates for standard trips. However, tourists are vulnerable to being overcharged and fares should therefore be agreed beforehand. Tipping is unnecessary.
