Weather

Austria has three climatic regions: the Alps (often sunny in winter but cloudy in summer); the Danube valley and the Vienna basin (the driest region); and the south-east, a region of heavy thunderstorms, with often severe winters but warmer summers than north of the Alps.

Generally speaking, winters are cold whilst summers are warm with cool nights and the most amount of rain. There is a warm, dry wind (the Fohn) in some north-to-south valleys, especially in autumn and spring, which can be responsible for fires and snow-melt leading to avalanches.

Festivals

The Salzburg Festival stages opera, dance, and concerts in July and August with nearly 200 performances. The Wiener Festwochen in Vienna has a wide-ranging arts programme between mid-May and mid-June. A free rock, jazz, and folk concert is held in the city at the end of June.
