Districts

Cyprus is divided into six districts, as listed below:

Famagusta District

• Greek Name: Ammochostos
• Turkish Name: Gazimagusa

Famagusta District's main town is the island's most important port, Famagusta. The vast majority of the district was occupied by the Turkish army in 1974, and is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is not recognized internationally.

A district administration in "exile" exists on the Republic of Cyprus controlled part of the island. This part of the district has a population of 37,738 inhabitants (2001).

Kyrenia District

• Greek Name: Keryneia
• Turkish Name: Girne

Kyrenia District is the smallest of Cyprus' districts, and is the only one fully controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. A district administration in "exile" exists on the Republic of Cyprus controlled part of the island.

Larnaca District

• Greek Name: Larnaka
• Turkish Name: Larnaka

A small part of the district was occupied by the Turkish army in 1974, and is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is not recognized internationally. The authorities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus administer the Turkish-occupied parts of Larnaca District as part of Nicosia District.

Larnaca hosts both a port and the island's most important airport, Larnaca International Airport. The town also hosts the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque which is sometimes referred to as the third holiest site in Islam.

Limassol District

• Greek Name: Lemesos
• Turkish Name: Limasol/Leymosun

Part of the Limassol district is leased to the United Kingdom, since there are the British military bases there.

Nicosia District

• Greek Name: Lefkosia
• Turkish Name: Lefkosa

The northern part of Nicosia city is capital city of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The authorities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus administer the Turkish-occupied parts of Larnaca District as part of Nicosia District.

Paphos District

• Greek Name: Pafos
• Turkish Name: Baf

The entire district is controlled by the internationally recognised government of Cyprus. There are four municipalities in Paphos District: Paphos, Yeroskipou, Peyia, and Polis Chrysochous.
