Venice
Consisting of 118 islands, Venice is a uniquely beautiful floating city which has been enchanting visitors for centuries. Everything you've heard about its charms are true, but nothing can prepare you for your first visit to the city. Standing in the middle of St. Mark's Square with the majestic Basilica di San Marco ahead of you and the glittering Grand Canal to your right, you begin to understand why there's nowhere quite like Venice. After absorbing the beauty of St. Marks, wander over to the pink and white vision that is the Doge's Palace, once the home of Venetian government. For a city so characterised by water, you can't help but encounter Venice's network of canals at every turn, whether you're crossing one of its 400 bridges - including the world famous Rialto - zipping over to the peaceful islands of Murano, Burano or Torcello on a waterbus, or simply lying back and letting the city's atmosphere wash over you from the plush cushions of a gondola.
If you're an art lover, be sure to visit the Galleria dell'Accademia, whose collection of Venetian paintings includes works by Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. Gourmets will also find plenty to feast on in Venice, and wine lovers shouldn't miss quaffing a Bellini while in town - the champagne and peach cocktail was born here. Unique, romantic and utterly beguiling, Venice is a city that deserves many return visits.
