Municipalities

The principality of Liechtenstein is divided into eleven municipalities (Gemeinden - singular Gemeinde), most consisting of only a single town. Five of the gemeinden fall within the electoral district, Unterland (lower country), the remainder are within Oberland (upper country).

  • Balzers
    In the southern point of the country, also includes the town of Mäls (population 4,436; area 19.6 sq km).
  • Eschen
    In the north, includes the town of Nendeln (population 4,076; area 10.3 sq km).
  • Gamprin
    On the Rhine, just west of Eschen, including the town of Bendern (population 1,436; area 6.1 sq km).
  • Mauren
    In the north, close to Eschen, includes Schaanwald (population 3,649; area 7.5 sq km).
  • Planken
    The smallest community, in north central Liechtenstein (population 366; area 5.3 sq km)
  • Ruggell
    On the Rhine, northernmost community of Liechtenstein (population 1,925; area 7.4 sq km).
  • Schaan
    The most populous community, just north of Vaduz (population 5,811; area 26.8 sq km).
  • Schellenberg
    In the north (population 974; area 3.5 sq km).
  • Triesen
    On the Rhine, just south of Vaduz (population 4,643; area 26.4 sq km)
  • Triesenberg
    Set between Vaduz and Triesen, includes the towns of Steg, Samina and Malbun (population 2,542; area 29.8 sq km).
  • Vaduz
    The capital, located in the centre of the country on the Rhine, the eastern boundary (population 5,047; area 17.3 sq km).
