Oslo
Oslo is both the capital and largest city in Norway and contains a great deal of variety within its borders, from the museums of the city centre to huge expanses of woodland on the city's periphery. Sandwiched between a clear fjord and forested hills and lakes, Oslo has also become a haven for sports fanatics from all over the world, with skiing, skating and the unconventional Norwegian sport of horse sleigh riding all available to try - this is very much an open air city, even during a Scandinavian winter. But you'll also do some strolling on foot during your stay, starting at the city's central hub where wide streets and graceful gardens characterise the main urban areas. Famous for its museums, don't miss the Viking Ship Museum, which contains two beautifully preserved long ships, as well as the Munch Museum - Edward Munch is Norway's most prestigious painter, whose work The Scream has become a much copied modern classic.
Oslo is well served by a variety of restaurants, bars and cafés, where candlelight enhances the Nordic atmosphere and the food is warming after a day in the fresh Norwegian air. Oslo is also a good base to explore the nearby fjords and countryside where unspoilt natural scenery and pure air will really help you come back home feeling relaxed and healthy.
