Culture and Etiquette

Even though Oman is a modern country, western influences are quite restricted, although the Ibadi form of Islam is fairly liberal in comparison with Sunni Islam and Shi'a Islam. Islamic ideals provide the conservative foundation of Oman's customs, laws and practices. Foreign visitors are expected to remain sensitive to the Islamic culture and visitors should dress modestly, especially women - long skirts or dresses are appropriate. Beachwear is prohibited anywhere except the beach.

A very important part of Omani culture is hospitality. Anyone invited into an Omani house is likely to be greeted with a bowl of dates, another of halwa, kawa (coffee with cardamon), tea with cardamom and ginger, fruit, and small sweet pastries.

Collecting sea shells, abalone, coral, crayfish and turtle eggs is prohibited. Visitors should ask permission before photographing people or property.
