Getting There and Travelling Around

International Airports

Internal Transport

There are some good domestic flights in Yemen, with services operating between Sana'a, Ta'izz and Hodeida. There are also flights from Aden.

Due to attacks against ships, travellers are advised against yachting off the Yemen coast, and in particular, the Gulf of Aden.

Car hire is available in the main towns, as are chauffeur-driven cars. However, road conditions are quite poor and many roads are in a state of disrepair, with mountain roads particularly hazardous; 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. There are approximately 5, 000 km (3,125 miles) of asphalt roads and 20,000 km (12,500 miles) of feeder roads. The roads within Sana'a and from Ta'izz to Mokha are generally good, as is the road from Aden to Mukalla. The rest of the road network is mainly limited to desert tracks. Visitors should be aware that the driving standards in Yemen are poor, and although traffic drives on the right, drivers sometimes travel on the left. The maximum speed limit is 100 km/h (62 mph), although this is rarely enforced.

There are regular intercity bus services, and shared taxis are also available for travel between cities. Taxi fares should always be negotiated beforehand.
