South America

South America is a continent situated mostly in the southern hemisphere and fully in the western hemisphere. It is bordered to the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the northwest by the Caribbean Sea and North America, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean.

South America has an area of 17,840,000 sq km (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. As of 2005, its population was estimated at more than 371,000,000. It is the fourth largest continent in terms of area and fifth largest in terms of population.
